We have chosen the ladybird as a symbol of Lady Bio, because ladybirds and organic agriculture are closely linked.
In fact, although few people know it, ladybirds are strong allies of organic farmers and are generally thought of as beneficial because they eat large quantities of insects and other arthropods that feed on various plants.
For example, a tiny single ladybird can consume in its short lifetime up to 5000 aphids, small insects that are related to plants’ pest.
Their bright coloration also serves as a warning to potential predators. When threatened they release a noxious liquid from their leg joints, sending a clear message about their taste.
Therefore, encouraging beneficial insects such as ladybirds by providing suitable living conditions, is a pest control strategy, often used in organic farming that avoids the use of chemical substances to get rid of harmful insects.
Long live ladybirds!
